The tear duct is the passage through which the tears drain off the eye. When this duct becomes plugged, it can lead to:
- Excessive tearing.
- Redness and swelling in and around the eyes.
- Infection.
- Pain.
What Causes a Blocked Tear Duct?
A blockage can result from:
- Mucous buildup in the lacrimal duct at birth and in infancy.
- Ingrown lashes.
- Thick or hardened discharge resulting from an eye infection such as pink eye, or a condition like a stye.
- Continued exposure to allergens that irritate the eyes.
- Obstruction due to airborne irritants, particularly in the work environment due to exposure to dust, chemicals, smoke, or pollution.
Treatments for Excessive Tearing
When someone suffers from excessive tearing, the eye will be examined and the tear duct probed to determine if a blockage exists. Antibiotic drops may be prescribed to treat the infection, and corticosteroid drops to treat any swelling. The blockage can sometimes be worked loose by massaging the tear duct along the side of the eye and down the nose.
If the blockage continues to return over and over again, an eye surgeon may suggest surgery to implant an artificial tear duct called a Jones tube to permanently open the lacrimal duct.
