Ptosis: Droopy Eyelid Correction in Tampa Bay
Do you have a droopy eyelid that affects your vision or makes you feel self-conscious? This condition, known as ptosis, can be corrected with surgery. If you’re in the Tampa Bay area, oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Geoffrey Kwitko offers expert ptosis repair to help you achieve a more refreshed and functional eyelid appearance.
What is Ptosis?
Ptosis refers to the drooping of the upper eyelid. It can affect one or both eyes and can range from a slight droop to complete obstruction of the pupil. Ptosis can be present at birth (congenital) or develop later in life (acquired).
Benefits of Ptosis Surgery:
- Improved vision
- A more alert and refreshed appearance
- Increased self-confidence
- Correction of eyelid asymmetry
- Elimination of compensatory brow lift

What Causes Ptosis?
Ptosis can be a congenital issue, meaning it is present at birth. It can also develop during a patient’s lifetime and may be caused by:
- Aging: The most common cause is the stretching or weakening of the levator muscle, which is responsible for lifting the eyelid.
- Congenital: Some individuals are born with a weakness of the levator muscle.
- Injury: Trauma to the eye or eyelid can damage the levator muscle.
- Neurological Conditions: Certain neurological disorders can affect the nerves that control the eyelid muscles.
- Eye Surgery: Ptosis can sometimes occur as a complication of other eye surgeries, such as cataract surgery or LASIK.
- Myasthenia Gravis: This autoimmune disease can cause muscle weakness, including in the eyelids.
- Tumors: In rare cases, a tumor can cause ptosis.
Symptoms of Ptosis:
- Drooping of the upper eyelid
- Difficulty keeping the eyelid open
- Tiredness or heaviness in the eyelids
- Reduced field of vision (especially if the drooping covers the pupil)
- Compensatory brow lift (raising the eyebrows to try to lift the eyelids)
What Happens During Ptosis Surgery?
Ptosis surgery aims to tighten or repair the levator muscle, lifting the eyelid to a more normal position. The specific technique used will depend on the cause and severity of the ptosis.
- Procedure: Ptosis surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation.
- Incisions: Incisions are usually made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid to minimize scarring.
- Muscle Adjustment: Dr. Kwitko will carefully adjust the levator muscle to raise the eyelid to the desired level.
- Recovery: Some swelling and bruising are normal after surgery. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a week or two.
