What is Dry Eye?
Dry eye occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or the tears they produce are poor quality. Tears are essential for lubricating and nourishing your eyes, maintaining clear vision and comfort.
Many times dry eye can be caused by eyelid malposition as well as decreased tear production. This is why teardrops alone do not always solve the problem.
Symptoms of Dry Eye
- Blurred vision
- Gritty or sandy sensation
- Burning or stinging
- Itching
- Redness
- Light sensitivity
- Excessive tearing (reflex tearing)
- Feeling of a foreign body in the eye
If you or a loved one is experienced the above symptoms, you should consult a knowledgeable eye surgeon such as Dr. Geoffrey M. Kwitko, M.D. F.A.C.S.
Causes of Dry Eye
Inadequate tear production may be the result of several factors, including eyelid malposition. Eyelid malposition refers to structural problems with the eyelids that don’t allow them to close properly, such as:
- Drooping upper lids (ptosis)
- Drooping lower lids (ectropion)
- In-turned eyelids (entropion)
- Scarred and shortened eyelids (retraction)
- Other abnormalities
In addition to eyelid malposition, dry eye can also be caused by:
- Aging
- Diseases that impair the eye’s ability to produce tears, including rheumatoid arthritis and collagen vascular diseases
- Drugs such as antihistamines and birth control pills
- Dry air from air conditioning, heat or other environmental factors
- Menopause
As an experienced Florida eye surgeon, Dr. Kwitko can diagnose and treat your dry eye condition. This includes performing eyelid surgery to correct eyelid malposition
